garden tour: march 2013

Welcome to the first garden tour of 2013

I wasn’t planning on having a garden this year because we
were gonna be gone for so long.

Last year I did a container garden and LOVED it!

It was perfect for Kevin and I. We don’t have a lot of time
{or will} to give to a garden but we love what it gives to us. It’s so fun to go
out and see a vegetable grow and say I GREW THIS. Then get to eat it. It is
very rewarding.

So as soon as I found out our first trip got cancelled, off
to the garden center I went!

First I had to convince Kevin to rebuild the “herb” garden
Mark had built for me almost 10 years ago.

He rebuilt one side at a time and now all we need to get is
dirt, and then we can plant!

before rebuild:

here you can see the old herb garden in the far right corner

{i always tried to avoid taken photos, cause it was falling down}

you can kinda make it out in this photo too

After first side of rebuild:

Cassie helped out with the construction!

I kept the old gate and stained it with
a weathered wood stain. I plan on staining the “box” too. I just haven’t gotten
around to it. Really all we need is to get a scoop of dirt and I can start
planting. I love the fact that you can walk down the middle of the “box” it
makes it easy to access the vegetables.

I also am doing the container garden again.

In the first to photos you can see what I did last year. I
had the along the grass so the sprinklers got the containers until Kevin hooked
up the drip system.  All the plants are
planted, drip system is set, now to watch them grow!

Ok so my pots are NOT the prettiest, please look past that
lol {they are freakin expensive} I had these when Mark lived here with Marzen,
do you see where chewed on the containers! Anyways I had painted them black
back then and it’s slowly chipping off!

First we have some red cabbage, never have grown it, I think
its more of a cooler weather plant {I know lettuce is} so we will see how it
does before the heat comes.

We are only gonna do 2 tomatoes this year. I hate tomatoes
so what’s the point, lol.

Kevin got to pick the 2 he wanted this is the first one the “bonnie
original”.

6

7

8

Next we planted 2 Anaheim peppers. We love chili rellenos. So
hopefully this pepper is similar. The tag said you could make chili rellenos
from them! It’s worth a try.

9

I even got the dogs some cat grass. Not sure if they will
eat it, but they might.

10

11

Back in oct/nov I planted some romaine a red leaf lettuce. Lettuce
likes the cool weather. We had 2 or 3 salads from it, it was pretty cool. I had
never really been to successful with lettuce. Then a few weeks ago before we
were gonna leave on our trip I cut all the lettuce for one of Kevin’s friends.
I just took a knife and sliced it of the stalk {is that what you call it}

Anyways I thought it was done and the plant would die. Now
this is what we have, so I will keep till it gets hot and doesn’t want to grow
anymore. Kinda excited to get another round out of it!

Here is the second tomato Kevin choose. “red beef steak”

15

16

I found some okra. I have grown it before, just didn’t know
how to cook it. lol

17

This is a Jalapeno from last year. Kevin wanted to keep it.
So I just trimmed it back a little and we will see how it does this year.

18

 Here is my over flow.
I bought a bunch of pansies {ILOVE PANSIES}

And yeah that another tomato plant, I couldn’t resist. It
suppose to be purple, will see. And an artichoke. I have been very successful with
artichokes! They have to grow for like 2 years before they bloom. So I figured
I would get a jump start on next year

This is some of our haul from last year. Lots of basil {cannot
wait to fill the herb garden with basil} banana peppers jalapenos & cherry
tomatoes!

Hope you enjoyed, I will try to give you an update on the
garden in april
